Check out the new website for Patrick’s recent project on The Mephistophone!
The Mephistophone is a mechatronic hybrid, a robot the size of a dowry chest with metal skeleton, acrylic tendons, and a mobile latex skin. In performance and exhibition spaces it can be either a dancer or an orchestra, synthesising movement from sound and vice versa. As an interpretive agent, the “soul of the machine” is supplied by machine intelligence algorithms that learn from experience and observation of human performances. The illusion of autonomy created by this imitation game has caused audiences and co-performers to react as if the machine is possessed – a reaction that led us to name it The Mephistophone.
